Debra Newton-Carter

Debra Newton-Carter is a genealogist, microhistorian, and published author with over 20 years of experience specializing in cross-cultural genealogy. Her extensive research into the Harlowe community – which documented 14 free Black soldiers who served in the Revolutionary War – led to her collaboration with the North Carolina Society Sons of the American Revolution to establish the Patriot Isaac Carter Chapter.

It remains the only SAR chapter worldwide named for a “Forgotten Patriot.” This work eventually led Debra to join the Forgotten Patriots book series, where she serves as a team leader, author, peer reviewer, and assistant editor. The first volume in the series, Forgotten Patriots: Northern Theater, has received national acclaim, winning both the 2025 Phillis Wheatley Book Award for historical nonfiction and the 2025 AAHGS International Book Award for military history.

Origins of the Isaac Carter Chapter

Beyond the series, Debra authored the article, “Isaac Carter, Forgotten Patriot of Clubfoot and Cahooque Creeks, Craven County, North Carolina,” for the Journal of the Society of the First African Families in English America, which detailed the life of her husband’s 3rd great-grandfather, and provided a 5-generation genealogy for his lineage. Guided by her motto, “extraordinary stories of ordinary people,” she is currently working on the second volume of the Forgotten Patriots series, focusing on the Mid-Atlantic Theater. She is also crafting a dual-timeline novel set in 1890 and 1990 Northampton, Massachusetts, exploring the intersection of a German immigrant family and a Jewish-Christian family dealing with grief and loss.
